Gordon Davis Johnson and Shane P.C.’s (the “Firm”) summer associate program is intended to recruit the best and brightest lawyers and expose them to the Firm’s practice areas, by providing them a look inside our firm. Through the program, the Firm’s goal is to provide you practical experience on projects and the opportunity to work along with and get to know our Firm’s lawyers, so you can understand the Firm’s atmosphere and mentality.
The goal behind the program is to determine which areas of practice you wish to potentially join our firm in. We intend to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities as a young soon-to-be lawyer, by providing you the opportunity to work with shareholders and other associates in the Firm. You will be given challenging work assignments such as mergers and acquisitions, international tax structuring, real estate acquisitions and real estate development, commercial litigation and civil litigation cases, to determine your work ethic, skill set and ability, as well as your interest in our Firm’s practice areas.
We typically assign you a shareholder mentor and associate mentor, which will help you throughout your summer. These mentors will introduce you to the Firm, its culture and people, as well as provide you with insight into your assignments and general firm activities. These mentors will help instruct you on practical skills and law office management issues. You will also work with supervising attorneys that are in charge of your day-to-day work. We want to give you a realistic view of what working in the Firm is as well as assist you in professional development to become an excellent attorney.
There will be summer social events that you will be invited to participate in, ranging from associate happy hours, dinners with shareholders, hiking in the Franklin Mountains, golfing events and baseball games at the El Paso Chihuahuas (AAA Affiliate of the San Diego Padres). The Firm prides itself on its friendships, with many of its shareholders having been friends for decades. We are a close-knit group of individuals with common goals, and look for people that match our Firm personality.
We are currently recruiting a summer associate from the incoming 1L class as well as from the 2L class. We are looking for individuals that will be ranked in the Top 10-15% of their class, with journal or law review experience as well as extracurricular activities. Even if you do not meet all of that criteria, you are encouraged to apply and meet with us in on campus interviews. We will make hiring recommendations to determine who we will bring for interviews at the Firm in El Paso during early spring, and make hiring determinations shortly thereafter.
